Elimination Diet While Breastfeeding: A Gentle Guide for Moms

Why try an elimination diet?
If your baby is experiencing eczema, tummy troubles, reflux, or excessive fussiness, their sensitive system might be reacting to something in your diet. This doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong—it just means their immune or digestive system is still maturing, and we’re looking for ways to help soothe their discomfort.

What is an elimination diet?
It’s a short-term, guided approach where you temporarily remove certain foods from your diet that are known to cause sensitivities in some babies. Common culprits include:

  • 🥛 Dairy

  • 🥚 Eggs

  • 🌱 Soy

  • 🌾 Wheat/gluten

  • 🥜 Nuts (less common)

You’ll continue breastfeeding—your milk is still the best nutrition for your baby. The goal is to gently identify if a particular food is triggering symptoms.

How it works:

  1. Remove one or more suspected foods for 2 weeks.

  2. Watch your baby’s symptoms—skin, digestion, sleep, fussiness.

  3. If symptoms improve, we’ll reintroduce one food at a time to confirm.

  4. If no improvement, we may reassess or explore other root causes using Functional Lab Testing or Nutrition Muscle Testing.

This is not forever.
It’s a temporary, investigative process—like a food diary for your baby’s health. Most moms can reintroduce many foods once their baby’s system matures or symptoms resolve.

However, food is not the actual problem. It is the nervous system.

As mentioned in previous blogs, eczema and reflux can be a signal of potential nervous system stress. Focusing on the calming the system into more of a parasympathetic (rest and digest) can help with baby's overall health.
