Bumps, Bruises, and Big Falls: Toddler Sprained Ankle

As children are starting to learn to walk + build some speed with running, it is possible that they will take a tumble or two. If you notice that they are now starting to limp or complain of their foot/ankle is hurting, it is possible that they have sprained their ankle.

Sprained is when the ligaments are overstretched. Most of the time, it can heal on it’s own within a few days, but there are times that might need some support.

Most experts are going to suggest something called RICE. We prefer: RAICE

R= Rest. Get them to take a little rest and chill on the couch or bed, if able to

A= Apply Arnica Cream/Gel topically to the area of concern

I= Using an ice pack wrapped in a paper towel or cloth for 10 minutes, 3-4x a day

C= Wrap it with athletic tape or kinesiotape

E= Raise the leg above the heart to help lessen the amount of swelling/inflammation

What does this realistically look like? Letting them grab their favorite blankie or stuffed animal, lie down on the couch or bed, applying arnica gel, ice pack, and placing the ankle/foot on a pillow raising it up.

Common Questions:

  • Should we bring them in to see their chiropractor? If there are no major signs listed below, and it is taking more than 2-3 days for your toddler to walk normally, YES. Your Doctors of Chiropractic in Aledo, TX are more than just doctors for the bones, we are trained in muscles, ligaments, connective tissue and more.

  • Should I use heat? We are going to say NO heat. Only ice for the first 3 days, then after examination, we may add in heat.

  • Red Light or no? We are going to say NO red light for the first 3 days.

  • Why no heat and no red light the first 3 days after injury? There is a normal amount of inflammation/swelling that will happen after any injury. This is expected and there to help with healing. The red light and heat will cause MORE blood flow to the area which can increase in more inflammation/swelling = more pain and longer healing

  • What is the #1 cream you recommend to have on hand for having a toddler? Arnica Gel or Bruise and Wound Cream from Rowe Casa. Both are found in our clinic.
