Does Chiropractic Care Help Babies With Reflux?

Newborn baby with reflux with pediatric chiropractic support at The Chiropractic Place in Aledo, Texas

Gentle pediatric chiropractic care may support babies with reflux by easing tension in the neck, jaw and body that can make feeding and settling harder. It doesn't replace your pediatrician's care, and it isn't a cure, but many families in Aledo notice their baby seems more comfortable, feeds more easily and settles better as they go through care. At The Chiropractic Place for Mommy & Me, every visit starts with a full birth and feeding history and uses fingertip pressure, about what you'd use to check if an avocado is ripe.

Few things are harder than watching your baby struggle after every feed. If you're searching late at night for answers, you're not alone, and you're asking the right questions. 💗

What is infant reflux, and is it normal?

Spit-up is very common in young babies. The muscle at the top of a baby's stomach is still maturing, so milk can come back up more easily, and many babies outgrow it as they grow.

When spit-up is frequent or comes with discomfort, parents understandably want to know why. Your pediatrician is the one to decide whether it's typical spit-up or reflux that needs medical care.

What signs of reflux do parents notice?

Parents who bring their babies to us often describe:

  • Frequent spit-up

  • Fussiness or crying during or after feeds

  • Arching the back or pulling away from the breast or bottle

  • Difficulty settling or staying asleep

  • Preferring to turn the head one direction, or feeding better on one side

  • Trouble getting or keeping a good latch

When should my baby see the pediatrician first?

If your baby has a fever, isn't feeding or gaining weight well, is vomiting forcefully, or just seems unwell, please call your pediatrician first. We're glad to work alongside them, and we'll happily see your baby once your pediatrician has checked in.

How might chiropractic support a baby with reflux?

Feeding is hard work for a newborn. Sucking, swallowing and breathing all have to work together, using muscles in the jaw, tongue, neck and upper body. A long or difficult labor, a C-section or an assisted delivery can leave tension in those areas, and that tension can make feeding feel harder.

Pediatric chiropractic care looks at how your baby's body and nervous system are communicating. The vagus nerve, the body's main "calm-down" pathway, helps the body settle after stress and plays a role in digestion. Gentle adjustments and light craniosacral work are designed to ease tension and support that communication, so your baby's body can adapt and settle more comfortably.

We've seen how meaningful this care can be for families: babies who seem more relaxed on the table, feeds that feel less like a battle, and parents who finally feel heard. Every baby responds differently, which is why we evaluate first and explain everything we find.

What happens at your baby's first visit?

  1. Conversation and history. We talk through your baby's birth, feeding, sleep and spit-up patterns, and your goals as a parent.

  2. A gentle exam. We assess posture, movement, primitive reflexes and how your baby turns, feeds and settles, then explain what we find.

  3. A tailored adjustment, only if it's right for your baby. Infant adjustments use light fingertip pressure, and you stay with your baby the whole time.

  4. At-home support. You leave with simple ideas to try between visits and a clear picture of next steps, and you decide what feels right for your family.

Our founder, Dr. Michelle Parker, DC, DACCP, IBCLC, is board certified in chiropractic pediatrics and is also an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, so feeding questions are always welcome. When a family needs a full lactation visit, we'll connect you with a trusted lactation consultant.

How can I help my baby with reflux at home?

  • Offer smaller, more frequent feeds, and burp your baby partway through.

  • Hold your baby upright for a little while after feeding.

  • Give plenty of supervised tummy time while your baby is awake, but not right after a feed.

  • Always lay your baby on their back to sleep on a flat, firm surface.

  • Talk with your pediatrician before changing formula or your own diet.

Frequently asked questions

Is chiropractic safe for babies with reflux? Our doctors use gentle techniques adjusted to each baby's age and size, with light fingertip pressure. Every first visit begins with a full health history and a gentle evaluation, and a parent stays with their baby throughout. If chiropractic isn't the right fit, we'll tell you and help you find the right next step.

How early can my baby be seen? Many parents bring their newborn in within the first two weeks after birth, especially after a long or difficult labor, a C-section or an assisted delivery, or when they've noticed feeding challenges.

Does chiropractic replace reflux medicine or my pediatrician's care? No. Chiropractic care works alongside your pediatrician. Please keep following your pediatrician's guidance, and talk with them before changing any medication.

How many visits will my baby need? Every baby is different. After the first visit, your doctor will talk through what they found and possible next steps, and you decide what feels right for your family.
